Who Qualifies for SMC-L?
You qualify for SMC-L if you have any one of the following service-connected conditions:
🖐️ Anatomical Loss or Loss of Use of Both Hands
Both hands amputated or completely non-functional (at or above the wrist)

Both feet amputated or completely non-functional (at or above the ankle)
🖐️🦶 One Hand AND One Foot
Anatomical loss or loss of use of one hand combined with one foot
👁️ Blindness in Both Eyes
Visual acuity of 5/200 or less in both eyes, with or without corrective lenses
🛏️ Permanently Bedridden
Permanently bedridden or so nearly bedridden as to require constant care
🏠 Regular Aid and Attendance
In need of regular aid and attendance (assistance with daily living activities)
Higher SMC Levels (Beyond L)
If you have additional severe disabilities or need aid and attendance, you may qualify for even higher SMC payments:
SMC-M

Important: SMC levels can stack and combine in complex ways. Some veterans with multiple catastrophic injuries receive $8,000-$10,000+/month. Professional representation by a VA attorney or experienced VSO is essential to ensure proper SMC level determination.
How to File for SMC-L
File for Your Base Disability Rating
Use VA Form 21-526EZ to file for the underlying condition (e.g., bilateral hand amputation under DC 5106 = automatic 100%).
Explicitly Request SMC Evaluation
Use VA Form 21-0847 (Request for Increased Compensation Based on SMC). State clearly which SMC level you believe you qualify for and why.
Submit Comprehensive Evidence
Include all medical records documenting the loss, functional capacity evaluations, photos/videos, and aid & attendance evidence if applicable.
